Serengeti National Park The iconic landscape of the Serengeti is well-known for its incredible migration of over a million zebra and wildebeest, moving between grazing areas and following the cycle of the rains. While this remains a remarkable spectacle and unique in its experience, the sheer size of the Serengeti wilderness offers other surprising corners and other big game interactions when the masses of herbivores are not in town. Being a stronghold for some of the largest prides of lion in Africa and some of the last remaining healthy cheetah populations, the survival of these species when food is at a premium is fascinating to watch. In the North there are areas such as the Lamai wedge where there are far less visitors, and flying in here when the migration is crossing the Mara River is an epic experience. To the west the beautiful Grumeti reserve protects an important buffer zone and includes some of the most luxurious lodge experiences in remote Africa. In the South, there are walking safaris amongst the umbrella thorn acacias in parts of the Serengeti where you will see few others. Choosing where, how and when to visit is an important choice and requires planning.
