Greystoke Mahale Greystoke Mahale is in a remote region of Western Tanzania that is less visited than the rest of the country. Yet this is one of the most interesting and pristine parts of East Africa. The main attraction is the superb chimpanzee reserve of Mahale Mountains, spectacularly located sprawling over the slopes that look out over the sparkling Lake Tanganyika. White sand lake beaches frame a wild forest canopy, unbroken from shore to peak, the distant cries of chimp colonies rounding off the magical atmosphere. Combining Mahale with the beautifully remote swamps and savannahs of Katavi that support big plains game is a great experience, and one that ought to be factored in to most client’s itineraries. Experiencing the chimps on foot here is one of the greatest wildlife interaction activities in the world. Greystoke Camp has an quirky but luxurious feel to it and blends wonderfully with the environment. The lovely aspect to this camp is the fact that the chimp tracking experience can be complemented with lake swimming, sundowner boat trips and exploration of the coves and inlets of a wild part of Lake Tanganyika. Due to the limited number of flights into western Tanzania we recommend a 7 night stay including Greystoke Camp and Katavi.
