Walking Safaris There are a huge variety of ways in which to enjoy guided walking safaris in African landscapes. Some of these include tracking wildlife with a specialist tracker, enjoying majestic scenery on a hike, gathering wild foods with the local Bushmen of the Kalahari or simply walking quietly with your guide, observing the big game en route. Each country in Africa delivers walking in a slightly different manner and some of the best walking safari guides are located in the best national parks and concessions of these countries. We focus on handpicking the very best of these experiences as well as matching what the client specifically wants to achieve. The usual objective of a walking safari is to observe the local flora and fauna from a more sensual and intimate perspective, and this includes the guides interpretation of signs left behind by the resident wildlife. Sometimes the most magical moments come from the tracking of large game; witnessing a leopard track in the sand made only an hour or so before. Some countries such as Zambia really do lead the way in the quality of their walking safaris. However, when you know where to look, there are exceptional camps, guides and concessions found over the entire continent, which offer the chance to really get under the skin of the local environment in a professional manner. For clients who like to break up the vehicle safaris we always try to recommend taking in a camp which can deliver first class walking, either as an activity offered as an alternative, or as a camp’s primary focus. Serious walking safaris, where coming up close to big game is common and intended, there are some fantastic camps such as the Chikoko Trails combination in South Luangwa, Jongomero in Ruaha, or Rekero Naboisho in the Masai Mara. Using your acute senses and awareness to pick up signs in the bush with your experienced guide, is a great feeling and one which speaks to all our roots as humans. We can also organise tracking in the bush with exceptional local peoples. The art of tracking can become addictive and the more safaris clients do, the more into it they become. Longer hikes and treks can be built into our itineraries, as indeed can expeditions on request.
