Laikipia Plateau and Meru The Laikipia Plateau of Central Kenya is a large, higher altitude expanse of reserves and private concessions, many of which were created as part of a re-wilding process. The rivers fed by the central highlands and Mount Kenya flow down into the arid landscape and enrich the north-eastern parts of Central Kenya, which is the wildest part of this Laikipia region and least pressured by human population. Laikipia North contains some of the more luxurious lodges with a great variety of activities including horse-riding, mountain-biking, extensive walking and fly-camping, with novelties such as rhino tracking on foot. Meru in the remote far east of this region is a stunningly beautiful game reserve that is less visited, yet offers a very special and authentic experience. Elsa’s Kopje and Offbeat Meru Camps offer old school safari experiences in a very peaceful landscape. North of the Laikipia Plateau are extensive wild frontier wilderness areas which can be experienced on a private charter plane or helicopter safari, after staying at one of the more luxurious lodges along the Ewaso Ngiro River. There is flexibility in terms of activities offered along the river banks and more expansive camel treks can be organised in this region.
