Mahale & Katavi Mahale Mountains national park is what we consider to be the finest location from which to track and view wild chimpanzees. A deep blue Lake Tanganyika protects white sandy beaches which rise steeply up to chimp inhabited jungles. The forests tumble all the way down to the placid lakeshore, making it a spectacular starting point from which to go in search of the chimpanzee colonies on foot. In terms of primate interaction experiences this is up there with the absolute best. The sheer isolated nature of the chimps and the feeling and ambience of the wild forests puts it in the category of one of the world’s highest quality wildlife interactions. Greystoke Mahale camp is in a spectacularly ethereal setting with the lush forests forming a wonderfully enchanting backdrop, from where you walk striaight out of camp into the chimpanzee forests. Katavi national park is one of the hidden gems in Africa, and still remains so. The remote savannahs and swamps here have a quiet, unexplored feeling coupled with a high-density game concentration, a combination of qualities hard to find together in East Africa. Flying in here and combining it with Mahale, the Ruaha and the wilder parts of the Serengeti is a magical experience.
